Plateau Community Recounts Horror of Deadly Night Attack as Security Concerns Persist

Residents of Plateau State have continued to recount harrowing experiences following attacks that have claimed lives, displaced families and deepened concerns about security in rural communities.

One survivor, Joseph Ize Zino, a youth leader from Zike community, described the terrifying moments when armed attackers stormed the village during the night.

According to him, the attack began shortly after midnight, forcing residents to flee their homes in search of safety.

“Around midnight, I heard the first gunshots,” he recalled.

Zino said he and other members of his household escaped by running into nearby fields, where they remained hidden as the violence unfolded.

“All of us in the house ran. That was how we survived,” he said.

From his hiding place, he said he could hear gunfire echoing across the community as the attackers moved through the village.

He also recounted hearing residents screaming and pleading for their lives amid the chaos.

The attack is one of several incidents that have affected communities in Plateau State, where recurring violence has resulted in loss of lives, destruction of property and the displacement of numerous families over the years.

Residents and community leaders have repeatedly expressed concerns about the limited security presence in some rural areas, arguing that many villages remain vulnerable to attacks due to their remote locations and inadequate security coverage.
